Editor's note:  Sheriff Howard Sills of Putnam County, Georgia is one of the most respected law enforcement officers in the Southeast and has been a very good friend to WeArePolitics as he has commented on several stories for us including the involvement of former Governor Roy Barnes in the Malachi York case that happened in his county.

Sheriff Sills sent this letter to Senator Saxby Chambliss and has asked me to publish it for him in its' entirety for all WeArePolitics readers.

BRAVO Sheriff Sills and I wish I lived in your county. I have a gun that was my late husband's and pray every day the the only way I would need to use that gun would be to shoot snakes, coyotes or deer.

As far as response time.. it depends. Longest time was 20 minutes to my rural home and shortest was 10 minutes. I guess it depends on who is on duty at the time and/or how much "juice" they have that day. I see more jelly bellies (in various municipalities & counties), who really DO need an exercise program. Especially if they have to go on a foot chase.

I also hope that my county (Peach) sheriff will back the Constitution and WE THE PEOPLE when it comes to an outrageous travesty should this Administration succeeds in this horrible bill on passing a gun ban.

A well written argument.

Ironic that the "free states" were some of the first to vote in laws that are equivalent to disarmament.

In Georgia, Molon Labe.

This says a lot about The Telegraph that Sheriff Sills of Putnam County would turn to wearepolitics.com to get the word out on something as important as this. You have to wonder if this grew out of his dealings with The Telegraph during the Nuwaubian affair in his County.

We see the fact that The Telegraph cannot be trusted coming out more and more and this is a shame. These people are supposed to be pillars of the community not bigots.

We think we all owe a vote of thanks to Sheriff Sills.

The Telegraph is nothing but a rag, worthy only of being used for lining the cages of animals and starting fires.

Be reminded that modern journalism is long dead. Extremely few report facts and instead now report opinions. Why? Opinions sell much better than facts, and with written media fading into anachronism, the opinions themselves have to be more sensational than ever to cut through the static and get people's attention in a world desensitized to information. This, thanks to the very age we live in: The Information Age.

The solution is to either heavily filter what you take in, or simply withdraw from the majority of media altogether. Both are difficult options, as even someone who withdraws will still need to remind themselves that it is all to easy to construct a comfortable echo-chamber to live in when it comes to news. Best to make sure that even the most modest of information consumers takes bias into account when viewing a recount of the day's events.

Thank you, Sheriff Sills, and Bill for this excellent, well written, articulate, and truthful letter.

Anyone know what Sheriff Davis' thoughts are on this subject?

I live in Sheriff Sills' county and think a lot of him. His views are right on...... I can't imagine living anywhere else as long as Sills is the Sheriff of Putnam County!

That has nothing to do with this letter & it's purpose. Shame on you! Hope you remember making that comment when one of those 'out of shape' deputies has to come to your aid one day!

After 40 years, only about 5% of the Air Force could pass the basic physical fitness test for the Air Force. You argument is denied.

Howard Sills is a great American. If only Congress would speak and act with such clarity. Then and only then would we have a chance to break free from the never ending cycle of using events and circumstance to advance long held ideological agenda.

I would like to read Howard Sills letter, but can't pull it up on FB.
Without reading it, I know I would most likely agree with anything Howard said. I've seen enough comments from others that he must take issue with the Macon Telegraph and journalism in general.

Living in Putnam County during the times of the Malachi York's years in Putnam County. It was a long drawn out time in which our sheriff handled the situation with diplomacy and held the county together as one until it was the "RIGHT" time and then the matter was completely and finally ended and in a tactful and quiet way. It was over before anyone knew it. And I must say that Malachi York is still in prison. Sheriff Seals treats all people the same in Putnam County, something that was not happening prior to his becoming Sheriff. He is not the "good ole boy" kind of Sheriff although he is well liked. He has earned the respect of the people of Putnam County by the job he has done. When it comes to the laws regarding guns, although I personally do not own one, nor do I know how to shoot one, my husband does have one and has been formally trained to shoot. I feel safer knowing that there is a gun in the house for our protection, which is the only time I can imagine it ever being used. There are many hunters in this and surrounding counties and it is a way of life for them. Some teach their small children how to shoot. It is the American way of life and we stand 100% behind the 2nd Amendment and Sheriff Seals and are proud we have such a man to stand up for our county. It is our God given right, and maybe we need more people to get closer to God and remember that's what the constituion was founded on. Thank you Sheriff Seals. We appreciate you and pray that you Hon. Saxby Chambless will support the people in the State of Georgia.

I completely agree with his stand on gun rights. Guns don't kill people, people do. And if the state can't afford to keep violent criminals in jail, don't! There's no reason for taxpayers to pay for food, education, medical, and living expenses for violent criminals. Forget being humanitarian when it comes to these incidents. If its beyond a shadow of a doubt, then hang, fry, shoot, or lethally inject. People aren't naturally good. It takes a reason to choose to be so. The less reason people have, the more morality will decline. None of this has anything to do with people owning guns. It has to do with people realizing there aren't real, serious consequences for their actions!

Thank you Sheriff for standing up for our Second Amendment rights! We are not criminal because we want to defend ourselves! We have the absolute right to do that under the Second Amendment. We also have the right to defend ourselves against foreign invasion, or even our own government should it turn tyrannical. I applaud you for asking the Senator to look into some of the real causes of crime. I was a judge for many years. People committed horrific crimes for a variety of reasons - most of them stressors places on them by the culture of violence, drugs, and death that is being pushed on them by the American "entertainment" industry. Enough already! Good, decent people need to avoid these shows and movies, thereby creating less of a demand for them. Teach your children well - spending time with them and educating them....And teach them the proper use of firearms, too, while you're at it! Afterall, the future of this country lies with them.
