The Macon Telegraph is reporting that former State Senator Robert Brown of Macon has apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

According to The Telegraph, Brown was last seen on Tuesday where he had eaten breakfast with a friend.  Another friend became concerned when he went to Brown's house and was not able to get him to the door, though his car was in the driveway.

Brown was elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1991 and was elected Senate Minority leader in 2005. becoming one of the most powerful Democratic senators in the state.  He left his seat to run unsuccessfully for Mayor of Macon earlier this year.  It has also been reported that Brown has been suffering from poor health.

Although Senator Brown and I did not see eye to eye politically, I met him one time and he was very cordial to me.  Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.
